Hi, Sieghard, I'm Brian Zolo here from Gahanna, Ohio, USA. Go into skype,
then hit alt t for tools, then hit the letter p for options, down arrow once
to audio, when you tab the first time, it will say microphone, I've got mine
set to Logitech usb headset, if you tab again, you'll be on a checkbox which
says let skype adjust my sound, make sure that this is not checked, then tab
again and it will say speakers, in my case it says windows default device,
which is a Soundblaster Live 5.1, down arrow and choose which ever sound
card you want. I'm using a Logitech usb headset, and I have my microphone
set to the headset and my speakers set to my 5.1 speakers which are on the
Soundblaster live 5.1 card. If I unload Jaws and restart it, Jaws comes
through the speakers, when I boot up Jaws comes through the usb headset.
I'd like to get a usb headset that has both usb and analog as I've got a
switch hooked up where I can switch from speakers to headphones but this is
strictly analog. I do like usb audio, but it does take over when you
connect the headset, the advantage is that it's a separate sound source, you
don't have to plug your headphones into your headphone jack on the sound
card. Hope I've helped, what is your skype id, may I add you and we can
talk further about this. My skype id is brianzo1. Hope to talk soon, as
I'd like to check out plantronics usb headsets. Feel free to call me BZ,
grin! BZ1

Subject: [Skypeenglish] Skype mutes other audio

Hello List,

I have a strange thing happening. Here is my setup:

Computer: P 4 2.8 Ghz
Operating system: Windows XP Professional SP3
Speech: Jaws 9.0 (latest update)
Skype: Version 3.8
Sound: Onboard Soundmax Digital Audio (I also have a basic Soundblaster card
in this system, but I disabled it to isolate the issue)
Headset: Plantronics DSP 500 USB, I also have a Logitech Quickcam Orbit AF
with built-in mic

The issue:
If I connect my USB headset, Jaws will switch from speakers to the headset.
I found on XP that this seems to be what happens when you hook up a USB
headset while the computer is running. Anyhow, if I unload Jaws and then
restart it, it will come back on the speakers.

Now, with my USB headset connected and having selected it in Skype both for
microphone and speakers in "Options" and "Audio Settings", my Windows audio
from the Soundblaster will mute as soon as I start a Skype call. So, Jaws
works on the external speakers and so do the Windows sounds until I start a
call on Skype. After that Jaws is gone and so are all system sounds. I have
a shortcut to bring up the windows volume control and I memorized how often
I have to tab in order to get to the mute checkbox and if I do this I
can uncheck the mute and Jaws and system sounds are back. The funny thing is
that it is not even the "Mute All" checkbox, but the next one down which on
my system is called "Wave/MP3".

I did try to make a call right after I plugged in the USB headset and Jaws
was on the headset and then Jaws stays, but system sounds which are coming
through SoundMAX Digital Audio and external speakers are muted.

It's very annoying, if I don't connect the headset and use the microphone
built in to the webcam everything is fine, but I prefer the headset as it is
better quality. I have been using Skype for years and have it on other
computers, too, and I never ran into anything like this. Any suggestions? Is
there a setting in Skype which tells the computer to mute the primary sound
driver when a call is happening? I know there is the "Mute All Sounds"
checkbox, but isn't that just for Skype sounds?

Thanks,
Sieghard
