There's a setting in Options that determines how long chat history is kept. There are also links at the tops of chat windows allowing you to choose how much of a chat's history to show. If the Options setting is set to keep chat messages forever, clicking the "From the Beginning" link in a chat window will produce a view of all the lines between you and that person for all time--or at least, for all time since you last cleared or cut short your chat history.
