I believe you can disable those updates via the options menu under advanced, but don't quote me on that. Look back at the tutorials done for skype 3.5, the options menu.

If you've installed version 4 you'll need to install the updated scripts or it won't work. You'll keep seeing those messages if you roll back to 3.8 because they're generated by the site which is thinking only about its sightling population.
