When installing Skype, you can also tell it to create a desktop icon. That way, if you need to launch Skype again or just open the window, you can open it from the desktop. Then again, there are people who don't want their desktop cluttered with icons. I for one don't mind at all. It saves me the trouble of setting up a shortcut, so I use it if the program provides the option.
