Special thanks to Artur and Jim for your suggestions that were helpful in my
resolving this strange problem.
I'm pleased to report it was resolved this afternoon. Ultimately, the
solution was to remove Skype, followed by a reinstall of 3.8, then migrate
up to 4.2. The most astonishing thing of all is that all the settings were
maintained throughout this process. I'm used to needing to reset things in
the configuration for Acessibility with each successive version of Skype
that I've installed, but when I went to do that in this instance, everything
was exactly as it should have been. The only exception was the view was at
default instead of compact, but this was easily sorted. The other settings
that often trip us up did not come into this.
The user is now pleased that they now have Skype available for doing what
they intended it to do for them, and a satisfied support person with another
win behind me.

It's possible that the combination will help to open things up. I didn't try
that exact progression of keystrokes yesterday, but have a call in to set up
a tandem session this afternoon.

Is this also the solution for regaining access to the contact list in
4.2? I read the information on the scripts page, but since the user
previously used 3.8, they find it handy to have conversations each in a
separate window.
No matter what I tried, I could not get access to the contact list. It
just says new search, contacts, groups and conversations and to." I
poked around with various forms of navigation including the Jaws
cursor, but could find no mention of all contacts.
In the view menu, contacts was checked, but it did little good.
Guessing the best solution here is to uninstall 4.2 and install 4.1.
Also the check marks for sounds were not read, so had to guess at them.
Fortunately when tested, all events worked as desired.
They apologised for putting me to trouble, but really, when there are
people that could be asked, I don't know why they don't do it. It
offered an upgrade, so she blindly took it, including the stupid Google
Chrome, which I hopefully did successfully get removed.
