I could have two machines loggedinto the same account. If I dialed tmy Skype
in number from one machine, the other would ring and I could make the
connection. Guess it won't ring now because if anyone is using the account,
it is considered occupied. As you say, you can do it by using two different
Skype accounts.
I was also wanting to use it as a DTMF generator for acoustic couupling, but
that's a story for another day.

I'm a bit confused. I have never seen a Skype version that allowed
you to call an account from itself, regardless of how many machines
were logged into that account at once. All Skype versions will of
course allow you to call yourself if you log into two different
accounts on different machines and then call one machine/account from
another.

Call it anti social. Not only do I use the Skype testing service, I
recommend it to others. It's always the first thing I teach after
installing Skype, largely because some people either don't know anyone
else to call or don't want to use the search facility to find them.
Being able to call myself between two different machines was useful to
me in different areas. It told me how the audio was working, which of
course, the Skype testing service would have shown me, but it told me
how much latency there was, which the Skype testing service would not
do. So you see there is method to my madness.
If I don't like the sound of a microphone, if I am in a connected
call, I can change it and learn the difference more quickly than using

I know this may perhaps seem a strange question to you, David, but
why do you need to call yourself to test Skype, when you can test
Skype with its own call testing service? If you have Skype 3, choose
"Skype test call" from your contact list, and if you use Skype 4,
choose "Echo / Sound test service". Calling that testing service was
the first thing I learned to do when I first got my own Skype two
years ago, and I thought everybody knew about that.

I'm not sure when this changed. I used to call myself to test
Skype on a new machine.
I don't have a new machine to test tonight. I had other reasons
for calling myself, but the long and the short is that I no longer
can. The only way I can do it is sign into Skype on one or other
machine with a different username.
Don't believe I've read that here anywhere before, so thought I'd
mention it.
