the adjust call voluem setting had been turned down to 4% in the
audio settings.
Moving back up again solved the problem.
Both Skype and windows have an annoying problem of attempting to know
what's best for you and then screwing it up.
Sounds like our current US government!

I can't hear incoming skype conversations but Larry for example can hear me.
I can't for example hear the echo sound test servidce. This problem
seems to be specific to the skype application.
