You must be using Skype 5 Beta as the instructions you gave me didn't work.
However, I selected the person and then I pressed shift-tab and the player
came up and I listened to the voice message. I need to look at the other
tabs to familiarize myself with the other functions.

to listen to a voicemail:
1. press ctrl+2 and scroll with harrows to find the conversation of
interest;
2. if you enabled compact view, press applications and choose send IM,
otherwise just select it with space;
3. press ctrl+5 then end and you should reach the line regarding the
voicemail;
4. press tab till you hear the "play" button and press space to that.
For sending a voicemail, just higlight the contact, press applications and
choose Send a voicemail.
IM is the short form of Instant Message, which is nothing more than a
chat. Basically, Send IM is another synonim of Start a chat.
