Hey Francis,
first of all, I did not get if you downgraded or not, so we will assume it's
a recent version of Skype, meaning 4 or 5, and that compact mode is enabled.
Second point, I am not sure of your screen reader, but I only know the
procedure which maybe is the easyest but there are some hotkeys which
require JAWS scripts for Skype.
Ok, here it is:
1. press ctrl+2 for going to the conversations list;
2. scroll the list with harrows till you find the name of the person which
sent you the message. If you're not sure of who it is, you should hear the
name followed by a number, or with Skype 4.1, before the name you should
hear the word "new";
3. press applications key and choose send IM;
4. press ctrl+5 and then end key, and if you hear something different than
the voicemail, press up harrow and see if you'll get it;
5. when you find that line, press tab till you hear play button, and space
here.
