True for some people but not most of us I think...

If you run Skype on a machine that's behind a firewall device or a
router, and you get a local IP address for your machine like
192.168.1.2, your Skype will not be available to participate in the
work of helping other Skypers' traffic get where it's going. I
explained this in more depth a while back on this list when I
explained the concept of a "Supernode." Most DSL and cable users I've
met use a router, or their DSL/cable modems are themselves routers.

To anyone on this list who doesn't understand me when I talk about IP
addresses, routers, etc., here's a back-of-the-hand checklist that
might help. If you're a "Supernode" according to this checklist, your
Skype may sometimes process traffic for other people. If not, it
probably won't.

You know you're probably NOT a Supernode if

1. You run more than one computer in your house and they can all
access the Internet at once through one cable or DSL connection.

2. Your computer doesn't have a network cable connected, and
somewhere in your house there's an Internet box with one or two
antennae on it.

You know you *may* be a Supernode if

1. You meet one of the above, but you or a local computer guru
forwarded Skype ports through your router so Skype can still talk more
directly to the Internet.

2. You go online by plugging directly into a cable or DSL modem, and
you have to run something like WinPoet on your computer to go online.

3. You go online via a USB Internet device like a cell card, and you
run special software on your computer to use it.

The secret sauce that makes Skype possible is "peer-to-peer"
technology, which means that every online user of Skype shares the
burden of routing, processing, and powering all those voice and video
calls.

It's a clever idea, and hey---if you've got bandwidth to spare, go
ahead and do your part by keeping Skype running in the background,
even when you're not chatting. If bandwidth is at a premium, though,
consider quitting Skype until you ready to chat again.
