Just a couple things in case they're useful: Skype 5 can be configured to bring up separate chat windows like Skype 3.8 did.
Skype 3.8 will reduce the voice quality of any call or conference it joins. It can also cause strange effects for other people who try to redirect Skype sound even if they're running a newer Skype but talking to a 3.8 user. I don't mind people using old or unpopular software except when it starts inconveniencing other people who are not doing so. In Skype's case though, that sort of inconveniencing sometimes happens, so I have a mild preference that people stay current with Skype. Policywise, I have not discontinued the distribution of Skype 3.8 scripts, though I no longer provide support or fixes to them. And for anyone who likes command-line interfaces, Clisk works pretty much identically with any Skype version 3.8 and later, possibly even with older Skype versions than 3.8, and also works the same way on Windows, Mac, and Linux machines. But of course, most people are no longer into command-line interfaces.
