There are two ways of writing a program that works with the Skype network. The first and oldest, which is what Clisk and SkypeTalking do, is the so-called Skype API. This is a communication channel between the new program and an instance of Skype running on the same computer. The second and newer approach, which is what GW Skype is doing, is a Software Development Kit, or SDK, that allows the new program to replace Skype on the computer and talk to the network directly. Confusingly though, this is still sometimes being called the "Skype API." I'm not actually sure what term should be used for this approach yet.
Sarah is drawing a distinction between programs that work with Skype and programs that replace it. It's at least a well-defined line to draw, but I haven't decided yet what I think should be done regarding the list topic.
