I don't regard Skype versions 5.5 through 5.8 as hard to navigate, though they are different than 3.8. You can enable separate chat windows in 5.x so your chats work similarly to 3.8 for starters. The The Ctrl+1 script keystroke still moves to your contact list. Menus such as the Call menu remain similar. The handling of voicemails and history are changed, I believe. My memory of the 3.8 interface is pretty spotty by now though.
