I might ought to clarify that remark about "missing options in NVDA."
In JAWS they're scripts, in Window-Eyes they're apps, in NVDA, they're addons or plugins; but for simplicity I'll use the terms "script" and "scripting" here. Scripters for all three environments can intercept events to make special behaviors occur at certain times. NVDA, for efficiency reasons, omits some of the events from those we can intercept. It just so happens that two of these, the window-created event and the window-activated event in JAWS terminology, are among those omitted in NVDA, and that I had planned to use those to report when a Skype sys-tray alert appears. I have not yet worked out a solution to this issue and have been working on other things instead for a while.
