A couple of things about it.
First of all, ctrl+4 only works if the Skype scripts are installed and
running, otherwise I don't know if there is a hotkey.
Secondly, when you open a chat window the scripts should authomatically take
you to the edit box, then with alt+1 and following (with scripts running as
well) you can read chat messages. BTW, if you don't have separate chat
windows, chances are you did not check the compact view, which I always
recommend to check since I consider default view can be a mess for us for
viewing chat messages.
