I have participated in a discussion on this list of the apparent
Microsoft plans to decommission the so-called Skype Desktop API. I
said this would effectively kill SkypeTalking and Clisk but not GW
Connect. I must now correct myself a bit.

The original article from which this news came to us, found now at

http://gigaom.com:80/2013/07/13/skype-says-it-will-kill-desktop-api-by-end-of-2013/

makes it sound like the termm "Desktop API" applies to both the API
used by SkypeTalking and Clisk, formerly called the "Public API," and
the newer API for creating whole clients like GW Connect, which I
believe is called the "Skype Dev Kit."

If I am correct here, GW Connect will die also.

Microsoft is urging developers to replace their use of the older APIs
with something called "Skype URIs," which is really a new name for a
(perhaps expanded) set of URL-like requests one can make against a
running Skype client. An example is "skype://dlee42?add," which is a
way of adding me as a contact from anywhere you can launch a URL.

I am in discussion with Skype / Microsoft people about the future of
the Skype APIs and will keep everyone informed as best I can.

In the mean time, I am interested in knowing of any apps people are
using that (1) require one of the apparently dying Skype APIs, and (2)
are not easily replaced by anything that does not rely on those. I
already know of Clisk (of course since I wrote it) and SkypeTalking,
but there may be others out there.

Thanks much for any input.
