The arrow-from-edit issue is a result of the Accessibility option
being checked in your Options. That makes Skype attempt to focus the
chat message list when you UpArrow from the edit box. Without that
option checked, upArrow from the edit box will instead let you edit
the last message you sent from that computer. I prefer the latter
behavior, and the accessibility option approach doesn't always work
for some reason anyway.

person's message area. Apologize if I should be changing topics, not sure
what to change it to.

Thanks much. Only for the sake of confirmation, yes, I have a Microsoft
Surface tablet/laptop, whatever, Windows 8.1, which does have a high
resolution screen. And I never see any of the messages as I type them, first
or future.

You might be encountering the problem I have with Skype, JAWS, and Windows
8.1 on a high-resolution laptop. I've been surprised that I have not heard
of others with the following problem by now.

On my machine, for at least the first message I send someone in a Skype
chat, I can not see any characters I am typing. I'm not sure
Ctrl+A works to select what I've typed, either. Sometimes, on
subsequent messages to the same person, things work normally.
Sometimes though, JAWS starts using "Type a message here" for the field name
instead of saying the person's name as I scripted it to do.
At such a time, JAWS also considers the field a "document" instead of an
edit box.

I have discussed this issue extensively with Freedom Scientific and have
also performed numerous experiments relating to this. My conclusions from
all this are as follows:

1. The first-message problem occurs with or without my scripts.

2. It only happens on Windows 8.1 as far as I know.

3. It may also be restricted to high-resolution laptops with above-average
DPI settings.

4. The occasional non-first-message problem is caused by a Skype anomaly
whereby the edit control first says to JAWS that it is a RichEdit control
but later says it is a UIA document instead. This may not be related to the
first-message problem.

I have not found a reliable way to fix this problem via scripting, though
since I can sometimes get the box to work better after the first message by
disabling my scripts, I suspect scripts can at least impact the second
issue.

I am not new to computers, but this is new to me. I have JAWS 15, and latest
version of Skype on Windows 8, but am running Classic Shell on top. Have
checked Accessible mod, and compact view. When I type into a message text
field, JAWS speaks the text, and my husband says it is on the screen, but it
does not appear on my braille display or when I use arrows to navigate in
it. I can highlight and cut or delete, but can't tell what I am doing. When
I read my messages back after sending I do see the text.
