Hi Larry.  The number indicates how many missed events you have in Skype,
such as birthdays, missed calls, unread chat messages, contact requests,
file transfers ... anything that may have happened in Skype since your last
sign-in.

If you're using JAWS and the Skype scripts, open Skype, then press Ctrl+2 to
get to the list of unattended events.
