I think the easiest way for doing this is by virtualizing the current chat. Assuming you're running Doug's scripts, pess alt+1 twice in quick succession while in the chat where you need to read something. If it's not in the latest message, you can go up with arrows. Or, if you know the word is, say, in the 5th latest message, you can press alt+5 in quick succession. Once you virtualized the chat, you can use JAWS standard commands like left/right arrows for moving by character, or ctrl+left/right arrows for moving by word. For non-expert users: note that numbers for reading chat messages or other stuff are the ones above the keiboard, not the ones on the number pad.
