I have not seen a Skype newer than 7.33 yet, so this is interesting to me. The most common cause I've seen for the message you're getting though, non-intuitive though it may be, is the installation and subsequent removal of Mathplayer. Reinstalling Mathplayer tends to fix this problem. The root cause is an alteration in registration of MSAA-related DLL files I believe, and the symptoms can be seen in applications and situations outside of Skype, although these are not as common. I did see a batch file that purported to fix the DLL registration problems, but I have yet to see or hear of it succeeding.
If you have recently removed Mathplayer or think something else you removed may have done so, you could try reinstalling it. If this is not an easy solution, I do have a set of scripts to work around this issue, though I have not until now advertised them. Let me know on this list if you need them. I would need to clean them up a bit, and I would need to release them in binary form only; but I could do that if helpful.
