Eu já tive esse problema aqui... resolvi alterando as permissões do dispositivo 
mesmo!
Note:
/dev/cdrom é um link para o dispositvo IDE/SCSI do seu cdrom...

O que vc deve verificar eh o device que corresponde ao seu CDROM/DVD

No meu caso, meus HD's são SATA e meu DVD é IDE, logo...
alterei o "/dev/hda"...

pode ser que seja isso...

ja q estamos falando de montagem automatica, eu tb tenho um problema e não 
encontrei solução ainda 

pen drive   ->  monta automaticamente, com usuarios normais e como root
CD / DVD  ->  monta somente como root, com usuarios normais da erro de 
permissões...

ja adicionei os usuarios no grupo plugdev, alterei permissões das pastas 
/mnt/dvd mnt/cdrom 

etc, etc..

alguém tem alguma ideia do q causa o problema?

Instalei o Slack 12 e recompilei o Kernel com um .config que tinha salvo 
do Kernel 2.6.21 que veio no Slack 12 RC1. O HAL não está montando
automaticamente nem o meu pendrive nem mídias CD/DVD. Fuçando atrás da
