I did read it and I read it again, this is the first that you mentioned that you do not have nvidia hardware, but you are right that makes the issue sound different. I wonder why its trying to use libvdpau_nvidia.so regardless? Perhaps this is a red herring? I am not familiar with vlc. Another idea is that this is related to DRI2 in which case I would suggest trying the modesetting xorg driver (Part of xorg-server) and / or DRI3.
