In regard to the second item below:
 
The redistributable packages for 2005 and 2008 versions of VS are available as seperate downloads at these links:
 
 
 
I'm not sure about licensing issues involved with redistribution of these files with an Express Version License, this may be the reason the redistributables are not included with express versions. It may not be allowable to redistribute these files under the Express version licensing, and your end users may have to download the redistributables themselves directly from Microsoft...
 
I'm also unsure where these downloads install the redistributables, but obtaining the files themselves is half the battle won.

The open source build should better support Visual Studio Express. If
you know of any JIRAs for Express build shortcomings, please link them

There's a new one on there from Mani Linden, asking for help locating
and installing the common runtime libraries. If anyone has an answer
for where those should be found, or a patch that helps cmake locate
the patch, that would be aweseome:
