My response in the comments section:
There are already several competing groups trying to accomplish this.
The SL-related one involves the AWG/OGP initiatives started by Linden
Lab. I think that requesting better *funding* for such groups might be
appropriate, but calling for standardization at this point is premature.
Let 3 or 4 or 5 such groups compete with equal government funding and
see what shakes out, or merges, or whatever.
