AWG -

As I reported back in December, Linden Lab has been reviewing and revising its roadmap for OGP and open virtual worlds in general. I'd like to share with you our plans for 2009, so you know what to expect, and know that we are serious about continuing this great work.

The first focus for 2009 will be on writing specification documents. We are going to spend more time internally preparing specifications with the goal of releasing very concrete designs each quarter for AWG review and comment. We believe it is time to evolve the format of community input and would like the AWG to move to a model more like other community design processes whereby more complete, fleshed out proposals are gathered for regular review and comment. My office hours will be repurposed for this, and we'll change them to being only once a month, but longer and with pre-published agendas.

The second focus for 2009 will be the IETF. We are going to begin the process of bringing open virtual world standards under the aegis of the IETF. We are hoping to organize an initial meeting at the IETF 74 meeting in San Francisco this coming March. We expect these plans to firm up in the next few weeks.

We believe this plan will enable us to make progress on OGP in 2009. As always, I'm passionate about the a future of open virtual worlds, and look forward to the detailed technical work we need to do to get there. Please come to my next office hours, on Feburary 3rd, 1pm to 2pm, if you'd like to talk about these plans.

Thank you,
         - Zero
