Custom bump maps Jira opened about two years ago: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1155 Nyx Linden seems to be a public-facing Linden that deals with client rendering stuff. You could show up at their office hours to get some direct answers to questions or propose things. If nothing else, they can point you in the right direction. Last time I was there I heard wishes about a full materials systems. Don't know if that was a dream or what, but the very idea is awesome.
