1. 2005 Express works perfectly. However, Microsoft doesn't openly
advertise how to get VC++2005 Express anymore, so it's a bit hard
to find. There's a download link to the English version on the
Imprudence project's wiki[1].
2. What I heard was that the 3rd-party libs LL has prebuilt is built
with VC++ '05 or '03, and VC++ 2008 has changed the name mangling
methods for C++ functions, so the linker doesn't know which
function is which. But this doesn't explain how it used to link
perfectly only to enter an infinite loop at runtime...

1) Not that I know of. Some have tried to do it with 2005 express (Which
is free) but had problems. But, apparently it is "doable".
2) As I understand it, the problem is in third party libraries that SL
uses.

Andrew,
Jees, I get to answer something. I'm using 2.8.0 like you. I tried
VS2008
but got waved off by several people. Reinstalled 2005 along side 2008 and
everything fell into place.

a couple semirelated questions
1 is there a semi-legit way to download a copy of 2005
2 Why Does Secondlife still require an obsolete IDE to compile??
