Yes the user settings file in :- ~/.secondlife/user_settings/settings.xml (linux) or C:/Documents and Settings/<you>/Application Data/Secondlife/user_settings/settings.xml (windows) will override the one supplied with the binary so you have a saved preference to show the grid box on one of your systems.
