Hi folks,
for the preparation of a first Slide 2.0 beta release which was scheduled for end of January what are mandatory actions to be taken and what stuff is still in the pipeline and needs to be finished?
----------------
I have already identified the following actions, yet to be finished. I would appreciate to get an estimation of when these will be finished:
Peter: - Clean binding and fix multistore problem, maybe enhance URI caching - Finish ACL
Oliver: - Rework ant build scripts, especially release targets
I have some work done in this area, done for the separation of the client part (see below)
----------------
There also is some stuff of unclear state (at least to me):
- Postgres port: Martin, I guess you have already done work on it, right? Will it be ready for the first beta?
- Oracle port: As far as I remember Christophe volunteered for it. Christophe, is this still the case?
- JTA lib: I proposed to use the JTA port done by the Geronimo people. Shall we use this for the source release of Slide and check it into the CVS?
+1
note that I also propose a change in the way we store libraries in CVS, see my next email for this.
- There have been proposals to split Slide in multiple parts, but there seems to be no ongoing work on it. What is the status?
I have the client/server separated on my disk. I was going to propose the new FS layout here before committing (since it's a rather intrusive change of moving stuff around
- I have lots of confusing stuff about Release Numbers and how to determine if a release is alpha, beta, rc or whatever. Could someone clarify?
eheh, there is no real apache-wise standard on what those numbers mean.
We can follow the HTTPD2/Tomcat5 habit and keep adding numbers until we think we can go final.
We can follow the odd/even strategy, a-la linux kernel (but nobody does in apache).
or we can follow the usual (keep it beta until final), but we have already 2.0.1 tagged on CVS.
----------------
Now for the showstoppers.
- Tests: look good
still have to try it on my machine... I'll report when I finish the ant scripts.
- Authentication wrapper: I think I fixed this, can someone confirm?
- Docs: Still a *HUGE* TODO! Anyone volunteering? Can we have a beta release without all these docs?
release early and often. my suggestion: don't hold a release because there are no docs. An up-to-date README/INSTALL pair should be enough for a first beta of a reborn effort. The docs will come later, with more users and developers... and if they knew how to get the system working anyway, that will filter them out and give us people that can really help.
this is a community building trick and worked for me very well in the past.
