Re: 2.0 distributions ready for checking

The client section and especially the command line client has lots of 
bugs not yet fixed. E.g. see #28649. Thomas' currently works on 
improving this, but as many changes were (and will be) more than simple 
fixes, but include more radical changes we decided to have his work 
based on the HEAD branch. Because of this #28595 did not go into the 
release branch even though - in this special case - it would have been 
possible and would have been useful.

Let's consider each of Thomas' changes indivually if we can take it over 
for 2.0.1
