Hi Darren,
I now found some time to have a look on you proposal. 

I get running the indexer (index is created an updated, but deletion 
seems not work)

But I can't get it used in any search. You have implemented the "contains"
operator only but the contains operator means "contains in content" so 
I think with contains the node indexer is never asked.

Can you describe a configuration and give a sample query that does work?
