It as always a matter of having everything in your classpath.
The delivered scripts are very basic and don't warn you when you run
something from a wrong directory or something cannot be found.

For the binary distribution 1.0.16
the client: 
   directory: E:\jakarta-slide-1.0.16\client 
   command:   bin\run
the examples: 
   directory: E:\jakarta-slide-1.0.16\slide\examples
   command:   example xml
