Try to add a collection/subdir via WebDAV/Win Explorer, go to contentstore/files/XXX, remove the dir and replace it by your link. Not very nice, but should work. The issue is, that you need to define the structure nodes, too. It's not enough only to add a subdir under contentstore/files.
