Hi Michael -
Re IM/Share, would you condider http://myjxta2.jxta.org?
If you have WebStart installed you can easily run a version of MyJXTA via the following
JNLP resource:
% javaws http://download.jxta.org/myjxta2/1.0a/myjxta.jnlp
More info on WebStart can be gained by following the link on the MyJXTA2 home page.
If not, the code is available via cvs:
% cvs -d :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvs co myjxta2
you'll need j2sdk 1.4.1/2, ant 1.5.1/3 and jxta platform, security and cms (we used to have
a nice "ant bootstrap" command for the later part of this process that is presently broken
but will be fixed in a bit).
hth,
- james

We are designing our Application Service Provision business around distributed Code Servers and Content Servers using Slide and JXTA! The Code Servers manage the executables on User Access Servers. The Content Servers manage the content for the User Applications. We are deploying User Access Servers, Code Servers and Content Servers both within our Data Centers and for performance reasons at remote facilities including some customer facilities...so far so good, JXTA is like a dream come true after trying with JINI and CORBA and then SOAP, JXTA is right on target. I was at the P2P Conference in SF when JXTA was announced and have followed ever since.
Ok so now the question. We have almost all of our customers and customer applications delivered via a Web Browser. We want to add IM/Chat, Presence and File Sharing to our delivered Applications. We have looked at Jabber and even deployed it successfully for one of our customers....but JXTA seems a better choice for a number of reasons. We also will have JXTA and PeerGroups already and don't want to add Jabber servers and duplicate and complicate if we can do what we want/need on top of JXTA.
I have read the Archive entries related to JXTA Applets. We don't want to
install anything on the client's machines if we don't have to. We want it
to be an option, but not a requirement, so WebStart and helper apps are
options. Firewalls are not a major problem, but NAT boxes are. Installation of a Relay in the DMZ of our customers is also not a good
option.
We believe an Applet loaded in a Web Page that acts as a minimal client to
our servers to provide IM/Chat, Presence and File Sharing is the answer. Has anybody toyed with this recently and can offer advice or share some
examples?
