Yes, you have to write your own store, configure it in the domain.xml and map the users and the scopes for users and groups (aka roles) to your store. We have done this too, it is possible.
like to use our native database information and provide an adaptor so that Slide can obtain read-only access (WebDAV editing of users, roles and groups isn't necessary).
