I had hoped that the Bundled Slide/Tomcat would also allow access to and
use of the Tomcat Admin and Manager applications, as well as use of the
Tomcat Admin to manage Users and Roles. The use of the SlideRealm in
the Bundled Slide/Tomcat seemed to hold that promise as the Tomcat Admin
application seems to allow management of Users and Roles in other
Realms.

I was even more excited at the prospect of this working when I added two
role nodes to my bundled Tomcat/Slide by creating two collections under
"/slide/roles" with the names "admin" and "manager" from a web folder
network place. This created two xml files in the metadata that I edited
and added the element

<property name="group-member-set" namespace="DAV:" value="<D:href
xmlns:D='DAV:'>/users/root</D:href>" type="" protected="false">
          <permissions />
</property>

to the admin.def.xml and manager.def.xml directly and restarted tomcat
and was then able to access both the Admin and Manager Tomcat
applications with root login.

I could then look at the Users and Roles but alas they were NOT the
SlideRealm Users and Roles but those listed in Tomcat Users xml.

BTW you should not modify the xml in the metadata while the Slide/Tomcat
is running as there may be a transaction pending that hasn't been
written yet. I found this out when my Admin folder and Manager folder
showed as "New Folder" when I restarted tomcat.

I did notice that in the bundled tomcat server.xml that both realms are
defined and I will experiment with that and the SlideRealm to see what's
what.

If it is possible to use the Tomcat Admin application to manage the
Users and Roles of the SlideRealm that would be a huge advantage and a
very compelling reason to use the bundled Tomcat/Slide.

Subject: RE: Slide Tomcat Bundle - More Information

Hi

What impact, if any, does the Slide Realm have on Tomcat Admin and
Manager
application.

This is the procedure I went through:
1. Downloaded File: jakarta-slide-2.0-tomcat-4.1.30.zip.
2. From: http://jakarta.apache.org/site/binindex.cgi.
3. File Download Link:
http://apache.towardex.com/jakarta/slide/binaries/jakarta-slide-2.0-tomc
at-4
.1.30.zip.
4. Unzipped to Desktop -> Created Folder:
jakarta-slide-2.0-tomcat-4.1.30.
5. README.txt.
6. RUNNING.txt
   a. Download and Install a Java Development Kit.
   b. Install the JDK according to the instructions included with the
release.
   c. Set an environment variable JAVA_HOME to the pathname of the
directory
into which you installed the JDK release.
   d. Unpack the binary distribution into a convenient location so that
the
distribution resides in its own directory (conventionally named
"jakarta-tomcat-4.0"). For the purposes of the remainder of this
document,
the symbolic name "${catalina.home}" is used to refer to the full
pathname
of the release directory.
   e. Start Up Tomcat 4.0.
      i. Set an environment variable CATALINA_HOME to the path of the
directory into which you have installed Tomcat 4.0.
      ii. Execute the shell command:
      iii. %CATALINA_HOME%\bin\startup.
      iv. Local Host (WORKS).
   f. Shutdown Tomcat 4.0
      i. Execute the shell command:
        ii. %CATALINA_HOME%\bin\shutdown
   g. Added Manager, and Admin roles to tomcat-users.xml.
   i. Added new user with the following roles "admin, manager".

At this point I am unable to access the admin or manager apps.

Thanks

Michael

Subject: Slide Tomcat Bundle

Hi

I just recently installed the slide tomcat bundle, and am having
problems
accessing the tomcat Admin and Manager apps.

I have added the roles of admin and manager to the tomcat-users.xml
file, as
well as, added a new user with both of those roles.

No matter what user name and password combination I user access is
denied
all the time.

It should be noted that I do have access to slide using the default
username
and password (root, root).

Does anyone know what to do to to access tomcat admin and manager?

Thanks

Michael
