Have just downloaded jakarta-slide-2.0-tomcat-5.0.19.tar.gz, had a look 
at the concerned sections and authentication actually is uncommented and 
thus switched on. Do not know what your are referring to...

Obviously to enable authentication one must uncomment out the referenced
section within the WEB-INF/web.xml file.
That would mean by default authentication is disabled in Slide.

Is the documentation incorrect, or am I missing something?

I have downloaded and am using jakarta-slide-server-2.0.
