We came to the conclusion that the bundled version only gets slide up and running quickly, but because you must do your user and role management with the command line client and mkcol and proppatch, it is not practical for a production environment.
For our production system we went with the slide.war so we could use Tomcat authentication. We still needed to create the Principal for each user by doing a mkcol command on the /slide/users/ collection for each user, and we ended up just manually updating the /slide/roles/[role].def.xml to add the user to the "member" element. One lesson learned is that the users and roles in the Domain.xml will create all the proper slide elements when you first create the "store". So you can get a good clean working slide by letting the slide.war expand and then going to the Domain.xml and setup the data for all your users and roles before accessing it for the first time (when the stores are created from the Domain.xml) or you can simply delete the filesystem "store" directory and let slide recreate it from the Domain.xml when you are ready. I agree with you that if possible it would be terrific if the slide-realm and the bundled tomcat allowed use of the tomcat admin application to manage users and roles and hopefully someone will step up with the applicable knowledge to make it so. Did you ever resolve the problem of accessing Tomcat Admin and Manager. I am new to Slide and the installation process for the bundled Tomcat slide package is really annoying. I am heartend by the face that lots of people seem to have got passed the installation phase. But not me yet.... My problem is that since the configuration file lets slide do the authentication I can't get to the Tomcat admin page or manager page. I could at one stage authenticate the /slide page but this no longer works (after my fiddling). Do you know of any documentation that will difinively get you to the point of basic installation. Example Domain.xml, server.xml would be really useful. Thanks in advance for any info you might be able to give me.
