To me it looks like you are trying to upload your file to a collection called directory, i.e. not *into* that collection, but trying to replace it with a resouce - which is of course not allowed. I suspect you use the 2.0 client which does not quite do what people expect on a put. I understand this will be fixed in 2.1, though...
