about slide version

How could I get the version number through slide api? how could i set up the Domain.xml file so that the version can be used when i user putmethod to put a file?
my current part of Domain.xml is
<parameter name="historypath">/history</parameter>

   <parameter name="workspacepath">/workspace</parameter>

   <parameter name="workingresourcepath">/workingresource</parameter>

   <parameter name="auto-version">checkout-checkin</parameter>

   <parameter name="auto-version-control">true</parameter>

   <parameter name="versioncontrol-exclude"/>

   <parameter name="checkout-fork">forbidden</parameter>

<parameter name="checkin-fork">forbidden</parameter>
how could i modify that? What is the difference between checkout and get, checkin and put? which one I should use when put a new file, and when put a file that has already been in slide?
