Has any consideration been put into coordinating with the Apache Agila project? They are building a standards based workflow system, and code exists already since it was donated from Gluecode software.
On a side note (not related to workflow, but project cross-pollination), if you check the incubator list, you will see that there has been also some talks a few days ago about Slide, JackRabbit and JCMS
There is not a lot of talk about JCMS but you can find the proposal here: http://wiki.apache.org/incubator/JcmsProposal
If you Google for it, you will not find much as well, except it is developped by a French company Jalios ( www.jalios.com ) and I'm not sure that the published source code will give you a lot of information as well.
It looks like to me that Slide offers more opportunities and potential to build services around. (ie having a jsr170 store backend and services on top: indexer, workflow, ...)
