A good article to look at regarding seperation of WebDAV and Slide:

Talks about WebDAV being a standard protocol (or even an API) by which
to talk to a (Document Management) repository.  Slide implements
(several) different custom repository that you define and automatically
exposes them though WebDAV.  Very good stuff ;-)
