Respecting depth header in NodeStore.retrieveObject(uri)

Hi,

In a custom implementation of NodeStore.retrieveObject(String uri) is it 
possible to *only* load child elements if the current depth is > 0? I 
would like to do so, however I can't find a way of determining the 
current depth. Any suggestions?
