Did you run a command like this to test mplayer ?

Code:
--------------------

  ./mplayer -cache 128 -playlist
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/shows/rpms/radio2/paul_jones.rpm -vc null -vo
null -ao pcm:nowaveheader:file=/dev/null -af
volume=1,resample=44100:0:1,channels=2

--------------------

This should show a running clock as data is read and sent to null.
You can add a "-v" to get more info on station setup and each data
packet.

If Mplayer is OK - then do a log of output when slimserver is started
from console with --d_source. This will give an indication what is
happening when trying to start mplayer process.
