I ran your comparison one-liner against the JSON version from the maven 
repository [1] with the same results: Some enhancements in the Maven Repository 
version, refactoring on our side and a single real difference: 
JSONWriter.maxdepth.

I would say, it should be save to switch (back) to the original.

In addition, there seems to be work being done there, so keeping up to date is 
much easier if we do the switch; the earlier, the better.
