Well, one thing I had done wrong was to remember that the new server is running IPv6 and the old one had not been. I didn't have an pg_hba entry for IPv6 for the slave server. I do now.

Both servers now show connections from each other and the two tables sl_log_1&2 are now empty, but updates I expected to see on the slave haven't happened.
