I'm guessing they're just leaving a little time for people to test and give 
feedback about '17-rc

Just yesterday I replicated a test instance of our environment from 8.3 to 8.4, 
I've yet to do any more real day to day operation tests. 

If you're using it purely for upgrade, I think it's pretty safe to say you'll 
be ok.
