What distribution are you running? What version pppd are you running?
Whereis your PPPlogin? I don't have that on my distribution.
I'll go through what I believe are the steps in setting it up......
First step is setting inittab to fireup mgetty ... sounds like it must be
happening..... but just to make sure:
xx:2345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty -D -x 3 /dev/whatever device
then /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
username * password *
then /etc/mgetty+sendfax/mgetty.config
port ttyxx
speed 115000
data-only
(enter for each port.)
then /etc/mgetty+senfax/login.config
AutoPPP/ - - /usr/sbin/pppd -detach auth login -chap
+pap modem crtscts lock proxyarp
set ip in /etc/ppp/options.ttyxx
Try the setup.... (if you changed inittab do telinit q to restart)
Check the logs (/var/log/messages and /var/log/mgetty.log.ttyxx) to see
what is happening
