Ahh. I couldn't configure those device either using ifconfig. The ip
command examples work though. On your Debian box type:
# apt-get install iproute
That is available from Debian 2.1 (current stable) onwards. For other
systems you neet iproute 980630 (minimally) to work with kernel 2.2.x
