While not pretending to understand why the butchering altered the man pages'
information, here's what you probably want:
The ip-up script has the following variables passed to it (in this order),
interface-name tty-device speed local-IP-address remote-IP-address ipparam
It also sets these environment variables:
DEVICE, IFNAME, IPLOCAL, IPREMOTE, SPEED, ORIG_UID, PPPLOGNAME
If the peer authenticates itself, PEERNAME is set also. If you are logging
into an NT server that gives dynamic DNS addresses, then DNS1 and DNS2 will be
set to the two addresses it sends you (if only one address is sent, then only
DNS1 is sent).
When the connection closes, pppd (for the use of ip-down and auth-down) sets
these environment variables, also:
CONNECT_TIME, BYTES_SENT, BYTES_RCVD, LINKNAME
If you need any more options, probably downloading the pppd package to get a
copy of the manpages would be just as quick as anything
